More than £11 million is estimated to have been spent in Hertfordshire’s local economies through film/TV companies on locational shoots in 2024/25
Around £4m of this was generated in the first three months of 2025, alone.
Hertfordshire Film Office – the organisation connecting production companies with locations and film studios – recorded an estimated £4,107,500 expenditure for all known location filming in Hertfordshire, in the final quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, bringing the total spend for the year to £11,328,300.
This was a marked increase from £5,757,000 for 2023/24, reflecting both the strength of the sector and improvements to data collection – for example, the use of Filming in England’s estimated economic spend toolkit and wider data gathering from within the county.
Hertfordshire Futures set up the Film Office to maximise the potential of the county’s thriving film/TV sector which includes independent production companies and global international brands such as Elstree Studios - celebrating its centenary this year - Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, Sky Studios Elstree and BBC Studioworks.
Adam Morley, Hertfordshire Futures, Creative Sector Lead, said: This is a testament to the work being supported by the Hertfordshire Film Office and our continued efforts to track, support, and grow the sector locally.
“Although the year began slowly due to industry strikes, the recovery and subsequent growth have been significant. We’ve begun receiving more complete reporting from all districts, including private locations. We’ve reclassified some filming areas as Hertfordshire rather than ‘London-adjacent,’ giving us a clearer picture of county-wide activity.”
Celia Taylor, Hertfordshire Futures Head of Media Trust, and Co-Founder, Distant Voices, said: “These figures are great news for the industry, a real lift for the film and TV workforce – but they are more than just statistics. They are tangible evidence that the Hertfordshire screen sector is experiencing renewed growth due to increased production spend – and this is in great measure down to the work of Hertfordshire Film Office in supporting production companies to realise their creative vision.”
Productions filmed in the county vary in size and include The Crown and Bridgerton which both made use of Hatfield House while Ricky Gervais’s After Life was set in Hemel Hempstead Old Town. Short sci-fi film, Selvedge, used Woodoaks Farm, Berry Farm, Space Film Studios and the disused Bovingdon airfield strip for its futuristic scenes.
In a further boost for Hertfordshire Film Office, Manager Pippa Cawdron has been appointed as the new Chair of Film Offices: UK (FO:UK), a forum sharing best practice and knowledge to boost the national film and TV sector.
She said: “Hertfordshire has so many diverse locations within the county, we know we can find the ideal location for your shoot, be it royal residences or quintessential villages and countryside, futuristic and apocalyptic landscapes or urban cityscapes. However – and more crucially perhaps – our supportive team will help you with your search – saving you time and money, which can often be a daunting challenge. Hertfordshire Film Office is the one-stop service, not just for locations, but for help in applying for permissions, finding local talent, crew and suppliers.”
