Hertfordshire has firmly established itself as a premier choice for overnight stays, with recent tourism statistics highlighting a significant post-pandemic rebound.
This resurgence underscores the county’s appeal as a must-visit destination.
According to the latest economic data from the Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) Visit Herts, the region’s tourism industry is nearing, and in some areas surpassing, pre-pandemic levels. In 2023, Hertfordshire recorded 1.9 million overnight stays, reflecting a 1% growth compared to 2019 and a remarkable 19% increase from 2022. This study, commissioned by Visit Herts, utilized the industry-respected Cambridge Economic Impact Model to measure the volume and value of tourism and its impact on the local economy.
The findings reveal that overnight visitors contributed £560 million to Hertfordshire’s economy in 2023, marking a 16% increase from 2022 and an impressive 12% rise compared to 2019. Additionally, spending per overnight trip has increased by 11% since 2019, indicating a growing trend toward extended stays and weekend breaks. A Hertfordshire Perceptions Study commissioned by Visit Herts in 2022 found that 77% of non-visitors would consider an overnight trip to Hertfordshire, drawn by its picturesque landscapes, historic attractions, and vibrant cultural offerings. The latest data confirms that this interest is translating into actual visits, with overnight stays continuing to grow.
In 2023, Hertfordshire was ranked third among the UK’s top ten “Hidden Gems” in Expedia’s Unexpected Travel Trends Report. This ranking highlights the county’s appeal as a top destination for relaxing breaks, where travellers can enjoy the scenic countryside and escape urban life.
Visit Herts also reports strong gains in visitor numbers, with 27.4 million people choosing to visit Hertfordshire in 2023, representing a 9.5% increase compared to 2022. The value of tourism in Hertfordshire reached £2.4 billion in 2023, now at 99% of pre-pandemic levels. These impressive recovery figures underscore the vital role of the tourism sector in supporting and growing the local economy.
Neil Hayes, CEO of Hertfordshire Futures, said: "The remarkable recovery of Hertfordshire’s visitor economy is testament to our county’s enduring appeal and resilience.”
Tourism continues to boost local employment, supporting 42,973 jobs across Hertfordshire—a 10% increase compared to 2022 and representing 6% of total employment within the county. This growth reflects the pivotal role of tourism in Hertfordshire’s economic health and its strong recovery trajectory.
Visit Herts Chief Executive, Deirdre Wells OBE, said: "Hertfordshire's resurgence as a top destination for overnight stays is a testament to its unique charm, rich history, and beautiful countryside that resonates with visitors seeking both relaxation and discovery. These strong recovery figures affirm the vital role tourism plays in our local economy, not only in driving visitor spending but in sustaining thousands of jobs.”
