The Creative and Screen Industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK, with just over half of the new studio space being planned and delivered around London and the South-East, coming to Hertfordshire.

With this in mind, Creative Careers Week (18th-22nd November) provided a perfect opportunity for Hertfordshire Futures to team up with Sky Studios Elstree and Discover! Creative Careers. A special series of roadshows are being delivered across the four Hertfordshire Colleges this week, highlighting skills gaps that exist in the industry, and showcasing the variety of career opportunities available.

These events are not for the typical creative career students but instead focus on students studying subjects such as Electrical, Carpentry, Business, Finance, Hair, Beauty, and Games Design.

Director of Curriculum at Hertford Regional College, Ryan Cowell said: “At Hertford Regional College we are delighted to partner with Hertfordshire Film Office, Hertfordshire Futures and Hertfordshire Opportunities Portal for Discover Creative Careers Week. These events provide a fantastic and valuable opportunity for our students to better understand the breadth of employment opportunities that are available to them within the film and television industry after they have completed their studies.”

Working closely with Hertfordshire Film Office and their industry contacts, Erica Hodges (Careers Coach) set about contacting the huge array of businesses and freelancers producing an impressive lineup of exhibitors from across the sector to speak to students that are Film and TV’s future talent.

Screenwriters, producers, set designers, riggers, specialist electricians and many more, are showing their support by agreeing to feature at one or more of the events across the week and spread the word about opportunities in their industry.

During the roadshows, a series of workshops are being delivered by sector specialists, and students are being given the opportunity to speak with exhibitors to discover future pathways in careers they’d never thought to explore.

This is a really exciting time because the industry has never been more open to new entrants than it is at the moment and in Hertfordshire there is an amazing industry waiting for young people to join.
