The latest Hertfordshire LEP Generation event is set to take place in Borehamwood on Wednesday, 16 November, and will enable young people to get insight and advice from big-name employers and inspiring start-ups.
Generation Hertsmere is organised by Hertfordshire LEP' skills portal HOP and Hertfordshire Careers Hub (part of The Careers and Enterprise Company) together with Hertsmere Borough Council's Economic Development team and Hertsmere Works. The event will enable young people who live or go to school in Hertsmere to meet representatives from Sky Studios Elstree, Tesco, Computacenter, the NHS and Doubletree Hilton, and a host of other businesses and entrepreneurs.
The careers fair will take place at Hilton Double Tree, off Barnet by-pass and will be open for young people in secondary school or college and their parents/carers to attend from 4pm until 6pm.
This event supports Hertfordshire Careers Hub's strategic plan by positioning careers education in the context of the local labour market - and aligns with Hertsmere Borough Council's economic development strategy, which identifies facilitating a skilled local workforce and creating a fit for purpose labour market as key objectives to driving economic growth.
Adrian Hawkins OBE, Chair of Hertfordshire LEP’s Skills Advisory Panel, said: “Generation Hertsmere will shine the spotlight on the abundance of jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities that the county has to offer our young people. This is the seventh Generation event Hertfordshire LEP has held to date, with past events introducing over 3,250 students, parents and carers to the exciting diversity of employers on their doorstep.
“These events play a crucial role in providing opportunities for local people, enabling employers to strengthen their relationship with local schools and colleges to develop their future talent pipeline.
“Supporting this is our careers portal, HOP (www.hopinto.co.uk), which connects employers to local talent and provides a vast bank of advice and resources to guide young people into careers they love. We urge everyone to visit HOP today.”
Councillor Caroline Clapper, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: "This is a real opportunity for youngsters from all backgrounds to actually meet and ask questions of some inspiring employers, the very people who are doing the jobs and in the professions they might one day like to fill.
"All the employers attending the fair will be more than happy to talk through what it's like to work where they do; the experience and qualifications you need to get into their industry and how their jobs have changed or might change in the future.
"I'm so delighted to see we have a huge mix of employers attending from across a wide range of sectors, including construction, health and social care, film and media, hospitality and tourism, life sciences, sport and leisure and public services.
"I would urge anyone with children who live or go to secondary school in the borough to bring them along to this fantastic event. It will certainly help open up their minds to the possibilities of their futures."
Producer/Director Rob Finlay will be among the employers with a stand on the day. Rob will be offering advice on how to pursue a career in filmmaking, photography and animation production.
Rob said: "I'm just delighted to be able to attend this fair and help support and encourage future filmmakers on the road to their own ventures. Film production is a demanding business, but one which offers huge rewards in terms of job satisfaction and personal development.
"I look forward to speaking to a wide range of young people on the day and will be offering a mini-workshop on production at the event."
