Located on the site of the current Common car park, contractors, Bourne Parking, will start work on the £6m project on 1 June. The Common car park will be closed and a temporary car park with 48 spaces will be made available at Fourways, site of the former Pizza Hut building. Signage is being introduced across the town centre, to direct people to the temporary parking.

Over a third of the town centre is currently used for surface level car parking. The multi-storey car park will consolidate some of this parking in one place, freeing up sites elsewhere for much needed new homes, shops, leisure and businesses.

Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), is contributing £4.8m from the Local Growth Fund towards the cost of the car park, with the council funding the remaining £1.2m.

Adam Wood, Head of Infrastructure & Regeneration at Hertfordshire LEP said: "Our £4.8m investment will unlock land in Hatfield town centre for redevelopment and help strengthen its offering to benefit the local community and businesses for years to come. This work forms part of our wider £6m programme of support to ensure the town is ready to meet the opportunities of the future."

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council recently announced the approval of a £20m redevelopment of One Town Centre in Hatfield to help attract new businesses and provide more jobs for local people. LEP funding for the multi-storey car park will help free up the two sites that are set to be developed as part of the scheme.

The multi-storey is due to open in spring 2021.​
