Hertfordshire LEP has invested £3.7m to enable the college to upgrade its sports science and teaching facilities in response to growing demand for higher level sports qualifications and related STEM roles.
Why?
Current facilities are beyond repair, with sports science laboratories located in a partially unoccupied and dilapidated building.
Impact
The refurbishment entails the creation of a specialist sports science facility including a sports laboratory, physio suite and teaching space with industry-standard equipment; a multi-purpose 4-court sports hall and gym with changing facilities and public areas; and a ‘3G’ artificial grass football pitch, with contribution to a further offsite ‘3G’ pitch in Hitchin.
The reconfiguration of the sports facilities will free up land for a residential development of 137 dwellings to meet local housing demand.
The development will help to even further the college’s successful sports provision which has a 92% achievement rate and has excellent employer relationships.
